Alaska is generally beautiful and as far as places as places it was wonderful and that I had more time and a better society I would travel for sure .. The city as a city is nothing special though the pioneer park is sympathetic, for example, But the real thing is when you go outside the city .. who loves nature, Alaska is a paradise, a northern paradise on earth. Glaciers, polar light, reindeers, bears, beautiful scenes, sunsets, skyscrapers ... it is interesting that the sky is huge and due to gravity clouds are much lower than ours. So everything works magically plus kilometers of roads and nature, how drive and walk around you jumping rabbits and mooses, and everywhere there are fields of purple high flowers that they call fireweed. Nature really excited me. But as far as nature has fascinated me, so many people have disappointed me so that my overall experience is neutral. Although there were nice people I met some very bad people. At the end of the summer I met a wonderful guy who managed to calm down, but we are on other side of the world. Tip, if you can, do not fall in love. :) First. Second, do not go to the program yourself. I, by the circumstance of the circumstances, left alone and I met those people with whom I shared the living space over the Internet, ie I got in touch with them. It's real and it can turn out okay, but it turned out bad for me. Because I really like nobody of the roommates, except for one girl. And with one I had a love hate relationship for 4 months. Others, others, as if they got out of the movie mean girls or so something .. I simply do not understand the level of behavior and lack of respect towards another person, and that comes from the adult person .. so go if you can with someone you know and whom you love and Save yourself a life. Try not to look at the bad things, and to save only that positive .. and no matter how bad the positive things will always be. Sleep well, eat fruit. You don't need money if you destroy your health. You are young, but the organism everything turns back to you one day. I know I sound like a granny, but it's true. :) And travel, travel, travel, do not spend money to see more, and especially beautiful Alaska. :)

7 years agoThe town is small, but still bulky and you need a car because it often rains and still get wet. It's beautiful in the summer, the temperature rarely goes above 30, the city is practically in the woods, and when you go down the street you do not have the feeling that you are in the city .. People are mostly immigrants from the south in search of better life with plenty Eskimos and Atabaskans.

8 years agoAlaska also has a summer, but at the end of August become cold, and the snow was falling even :D city is full of Eskimo and most of them are constantly drunk and drugged so that they should just ignore it ... fascinating is that by mid-July sun shone 23 hours at day, and when it started normally goes down, then began occasionally aurora that appears. + Location is so popular that in summer season filled with j1 students mostly from the Balkan, so that when you go to Wallmart, nearby shops or restaurants and fast food, the better the chances that you will talk to Serbian than English ... I came in June and I could not find another job until August (and I speak english excellent - and I was the only one who has not found a job, some for the whole year only had one), I applied to over 40 of the city but it was already taken, and that's how we was :)

Home Depot, Fairbanks, Alaska, AYUSA
8 years agoThe city as a city is nothing special, there are also the place to go or for other things but of course not even close to the larger cities in the USA. Additional work is found whoever was looking for (do not expect all server operations because there is no enough position). Who wants to work and earn and go out sometimes / or something traveled around Alaska, this is the right city for him / her.

The place is quite small, from one end to other one, an hour by bike, which is good because you leave the entire city to search for other jobs in terms nowhere will not lose too much time in transport. As for the temperature, I'm not so coldish so that for me was great. Jacket I had the whole summer temperature is initially moving around 25-28 in September has already falled, and while I was there (the very end of September) came to -3. As for the weather, it was raining, but I was lucky that when the rains were over I was on job so I only twice got rained :D

Princess Cruises, Fairbanks, Alaska, AYUSA
8 years agoAs soon as you know you are getting a job in Fairbanks, looking for contacts from agencies and gather people working with you. You probably will not have a pension from the company (or will offer a lot more expensive than what you yourself can be found), so go right now to get to know. They are used to working all over the internet so that you can rent an apartment over the net before going there. We lived in Sophie Station, because it is close to Princess, Safeway, a Pike's-a ... 6 of us lived in a two bedroom apartment at one time and 7 and we paid $ 230 per month. This allows the least important because there you spend for at least the time. Those who get a job at Home Depot, Wesmark, etc., you should be looking for a flat somewhere closer to downtown in because this is a long way away. Not impossible, but considering that you probably used to travel to work by bicycle in the rain, waterproof jacket is not enough to keep a cold at such a distance. A minimum of what you need then there is cold. You know Work and Travel story to rent unfurnished apartments ?! They usually have built-in wardrobes, furnished kitchen the only thing you need to buy an inflatable mattress. This and bicycle are the first two things you buy at Fred-in when you arrive, and then the SIM card. :) And when you're looking for another job, see that you close the first and residence, not to waste a lot of time in transit, because you do not have much time. Not timetable crucial, choose something that you enjoy the job remotely and that is close to you, and will be the difference in the schedule to compensate for the difference in the number of hours. Usually those who give less hourly give more hours a week, and vice versa. It would be cool if you buy together and map to go to the same flight there, the easier it will be your own. We bought over those agencies which had AYUSA recommended, it turned out that this is the cheapest option. And far we have been cheaper to go from Budapest, and there we went Geom. All our experiences are positive, although you will have much to read on the Internet, do not believe everything you say. Prepare yourself mentally to go to work 4 months, because even though you'll not want to do, you will be bored, all the people working at two jobs, some have even worked and 3 full-time job. Do not ask how, I do not know how they endured. Relax, you realize that some things are not up to you and enjoy. The more you enjoy this four months and not to annoy, so will all the 15-hour work day easier to fall. Do not bother too much you get 32 hours a week or less, it will all come into their own if you're a hard worker, Americans like it when you're diligent and doing all you can, the rewards you for hours, do not worry. The city after city is quite a superficial, but not many people, they have a lot of tourists in the summer, so it's quite a big demand for labor, do not worry as far as the other business. As for the other work you have let three sectors roughly speaking: 1. Hotels - housekeeping, laundry and rarely prepcook (Princess, Pike's or if you are closer to downtown in Merriott, Hyatt, Westmark ...); 2. markets - position the cashier, stocker night (Safeway, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe's, Fred does not employ J1); 3. fast food's - that everyone does everything (Carls Junior, Mc Donalds, Pump House, Taco Bell); Now I will explain each sector individually. If already in the first sector, few will give you so lonely that you're doing two very similar work, but it is not hard to do these jobs, I was much less strenuous than the cashier. These include; Other sectors - not bad to work night stocker - my friends are just chilling in the Safeway, it is not hard. The menu at the checkout day shift bit was very hard at first, because you are not trained and prepared for this position, but later was wonderful. I've had customers who came regularly only in my turn, we always apologized and English has improved a lot because of this job, especially accent. As for the third sector, there are hourly rate lower than the other, or you have a meal somewhere compensate for this difference, it is a lot especially when it is crowded, but I know people who were satisfied and had overtime in this sector. I suggest you go to Fairbanks few days ago, we went 10 days earlier. First, buy a number, apply for a SSN and slowly go out and applying to all sites, so where you call. What is important to know is that they should be boring after applying, we went 3-4 times a Safeway after we applied and asked HR managers in order to schedule an interview. There are a lot of tugging for that matter, so it is better to make it all before you start doing the first job because you are then many terms do not match. After 6 days I MSM can go to Social Services to ask for your SSN although the two weeks after you get the card with the employer, so that when you are applying to write a real SSN, although you it's not really that important. So this interim period when you arrive, but do not yet begin to do well to buy some of these things for the first aid, applying for SSN, opening a bank account (Wells Fargo, we all had an account here) and the active application and search for another job. The moment you start doing other work , time starts to fly . Meet new people, you meet new friends , a little disappointed in a third , but it is all part of , and should not touch you so much. Since in Fairbanks have only two clubs that are nothing like ours , a lot of you to drink in the nature park (although this is forbidden : D ) , flat ... You have a wonderful barbecue places along Chena , so make the most of these places . For those who live in Sophie Station , you will be as sightseeing tour , half Sophie the J1 students in summer , although not quite to yelling late there as a field trip . :) After you have a very nice Fairbanks Pioneer Park, a relaxing seating along the Chena River, the bus you can go to the house of Santa Claus at the North Pole, not far away. As for the trip to Chena Hot Springs, Denali and stay here you need a car, rent a car, you can only if you have more than 25 years. Travel, organizing two days and visit Valdez and glaciers, it's great, who knows when you will have the opportunity to go to Alaska. Most Americans did not visit Alaska, so that all that you wonder what made the young man from Serbia to come to work two jobs in Alaska. :) I know you guys are doing calculations about how much you can earn / save, but do not worry about it, because a lot depends on you a little, a lot more than luck and season. What what I can assure you that you will not be happy whenever you turn it, because you will be working two jobs, where you will not have to spend so much money and that's it. Speaking of money, I took $ 800 spending money, and it was dark, because we left early enough, and we've fallen into non-wage Sunday, we first paychek received after 17 days. Bring brandy !!! : D If you do not drink, cheer for the Yanks, they really like, they drink a lot in Alaska, we are not the worst. : D As for the climate, not much cold as you all talking about, or you need a jacket on a bicycle in the morning, even in July, there's a big difference between morning and afternoon temperatures. Wear minimal clothes because you will mostly be working uniforms, and there you are buying a lot of it, because it is marked wardrobe rather cheap. Relax, enjoy the wonderful Fairbanks, mingle with the people, do not be so bedevil, eat fruit: D and you will see that you will be very sorry when you're leaving because you simply get under the skin. Good luck!

Fairbanks is a delightful little town, in the beginning I hated him, however with time it gets under the skin that when the day to go home is closer, you just do not want to go. The climate is perfect for work, not too hot, not too cold. The only bad thing is the rain, which is very common, but if you want to come to Alaska you have to accept it. The chances for a second job are great when you want to get a job and who is persistent will succeed. I worked three jobs, and had time to do everything. Be persistent and start from the beginning to look for work, it is easier. Bring winter things from home because it will before the end of the program really be necessary. Do not be upset, about earnings, all in the end come to its place, do not listen to others, rely on yourself. Maximum enjoy, browse, Alaska is a fantastic country. Do not just work, leave some time for yourself and for sightseeing. Visit the Denali, Valdez, Chenu Hot Spring and everything else so that you do not repent after you return home because this is a unique opportunity. I now regret that I did not devote more time to Alaska than just work. Learn from the mistakes of others. In the beginning it was very difficult, there will be times when you will thin why didi you nedeed this, but it is only a temporary state, be sure that it will be the most beautiful summer in your life. I will share with you litle part of my diary that I wrote in Alaska 4 months, and which is the most valuable thing I brought from there, so if you doubt you are going to stop, and decide to go on an adventure: D: "Coming to the Newark airport with a smile on my face. This was definitely the most beautiful summer of my life, but still, after five months of one chapter of my life here closes. This summer I woke up, changed, here I became stronger, more mature, resourceful, I learned to fight for myself. I decided not to be sad at the end, but happy. When I look behind me and I realize what I've achieved and endured I am proud. It was hard, I worked a lot, laughed, cried, suffered, met many fellow for life, perfected language, fell in love, became independent, hardened and finally managed to achieve my goal. Now I know that my decision to go to the America definitely the best decision I ever made, even though I was very skeptical at first. I grew up to 5 months and the wedding party, finally what I want. With this I conclude my thoughts, it is time to put an end to this journal. Five months have passed, and now I need to open a new chapter, because at the end of each end, there is always new beginning waiting for you. " I hope that my experience will be useful to you, and it's up to you to print your own pages of the diaries. Be strong, persistent it will payoff. One person dear to me gave me the advice to learn the American system "without emotion" and she was right. Do not get attached to the people so that you would not get hurt, because in America we have gut feelings. I wish you much luck, and for you it only remains to pack your bags and go. : D

Holland America Princess, Fairbanks, AK, AYUSA
8 years agoFairbanks is a city in central Alaska, the second largest after the Anchorage. It has everything needed for daily life. Climate is quite decent, even after the arrival we had a very warm days with temperatures above 30C. There is no night until about mid-August, when the temperature begins to descend, so in early September mornings were just slightly above zero. In general, this year we were lucky, because, versus expectations for August and September, rain almost never happened. So you can toerate litle lower temperature very easily, especially because there were almost no wind . There is enough work , especially at the beginning of the season. Most is done by hypermarkets and hotels, so it is easy to find another, even a third job if necessary :) As for nightlife, there isn't nothing special. A pair of clubs / bars with an unusual way of partying for us Balkans. With time, people get used and there is always socializing at the apartments where can be a very good atmosphere :) Accommodation is very cheap, but I would recommend that you find it from Serbia, so that you would not be spending money on hotels in the beginning and to skippe the stress of finding accommodation that we had. Surrounding of the town is fantastic, close to Denali National Park, which you should visit for sure. I am sorry that people stick to the job and for the whole year they do not go out of the city so that they would not lose that shift, and have the opportunity to see the free nature and the scenes that people are separateing a lot of money and crossing the world to enjoy them. All in all, a complete place for this program, I would say.

The Pump House, Fairbanks, AYUSA
8 years agoI went on a self variant because it was the second year of traveling, the City has about 70000 inhabitants. Access to employment is great, because it is a tourist town and over the years I know people who have worked four jobs.. I worked as a waiter and I think that's the best deal by which the above can be found, but not a bad option is not a market, hotel, car wash anything for the first shift, but a few hours later as assistant waiter or something for someone who goes for the first time and no experience and his tongue is not on the level. Alaska is beautiful there are many things that you can see the northern lights if you're lucky, in September, glaciers, Denali national park ... swimming in thermal springs ... Air conditioning is extra because of the years of 20-35 degrees. So there is no great heat but not cold, relaxed rad.. if a certain case has to work outside ... Nightlife is not like in Miami, Vegas, San Francisco, New York and other cities where I was, there are 2 bigger club, and plenty of bars that are considered not like a clubs can not pass if you're ok with the team. The most important thing is that you can earn great and to travel at the end of program! So that the agency did not do anything special for me ... Accommodation I lived in an apartment with two extra bedrooms, living room and kitchen, terrace and we paid $ 1600 per month , can easily 7 people that live here . We had a parking place , beach volleyball , tennis courts , a place for barbecue . Look on site sophieplaza.com, at ithat accommodations I lived, but if someone planning there to live here must be booked through ents earlier because of the crowd to all the soldiers and Lovato live here ...
