TOP 5 REASONS STUDENTS GO ON W&T PROGRAM

Having attended several job fairs where we had a chance to hear what students answer when asked by the recruiters and employers why they want to go on the Work & Travel program.

Since the goal of this program is primarily to bring the American culture and way of life closer to the younger generations who can communicate the experiences gained on this program to their friends and community, the following answers did not surprise us at all and actually made us happy and gave us hope that students do apply for this program out of the sincere motives.

1. TO IMPROVE MY ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS

One of the rules of learning and acquiring a foreign language is spending time in a country where that languge is spoken. When you are exposed to a certain language 24/7, your brains starts functioning in a different way, you acquire new concepts much faster, and the moment you start dreaming in a different language, you are on your way to mastering it.

Actually, your goal should be to feel comfortable and confident to talk in that language even if somebody stops you on the street and asks you: “Hey girl, take a walk on a wild side…”

2. TO MEET NEW PEOPLE

If this is something you want to achieve then you made a right decision! Even if you are naturally a shy person, especially if you will be working as a life guard, or some other job where you have a chance to talk to the visitors, guests, clients, customers… Americans often start a conversation by saying “How you doing?”, so if it happens that sometimes you do not feel like talking, just take it easy and be stay nice and keep smiling. ????

3. TO GAIN NEW EXPERIENCES

Going to the other side of the world is an experience for itself. Ordering triple-cheese in McDonald’s, making your own sandwich in Subway, or ordering ice-choco-caramel-toffee-additional-shot-espresso coffee in Starbucks is an experience in itself, as well. Somebody stops smoking because cigarettes are very expensive in the US- an amazing experience. Somebody smokes weed for the first time, especially if you go to one of the American states that legalize it- a new experience. Waking up at 6 a.m. in order to get ready for work you have never done in your life in a language you have never actively used, going to bed at 2. a.m. in the morning and, waking up at, we will let you guess when- a new experience. In fact, everything new you do that requires leaving your comfort zone for one second is a special experience.

4. TO VISIT NEW YORK CITY, MIAMI…

Traveling across the US is maybe the best part of the program. Having earned a bunch of money, you can afford to travel and some of these packages are very affordable, even for a Work & Travel student’s pocket. Some students only want to walk around West Village and Soho, others want to go to the West coast, somebody else wants to gamble in Las Vegas, somebody else to drink a beer, or two, or a bottle of Jack Daniel’s on South Beach. Somebody won’t be satisfied neither with being on the East nor being on the West coast, but will head to Dominican Republic, Mexico, the Bahamas. And Cuba, very soon. With a good organization, all these destinations are only couple of hours away from the place you will spend your summer in.

5. TO TEST THE LIMITS OF MY ABILITIES

Well… what else? Work & travel program is the least painful way to do it. All you have to do is ask if you do not know and not be embarrassed to try until you get a positive answer. Do not despair if two people do not help you, the third one gives you the wrong information, the forth f*cks up and the fifth leaves you. However hard the situation might seem, there is always a way out- of course, if it is legal. It is much more meaningful than lying drunk in your bed after spending all your money in Trocadero or Top Hill in Budva, or vacationing in Kavos, Lefkada, and other places. Maybe you will learn in the US more than what drinks should not be mixed together…
