HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE JOB FAIR
HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE JOB FAIR
Job fair is a fair for students interested in the Work and Travel program. There you have a chance to get to know a program a little bit more, its rules , obligations and other things.
Our American partners from the sponsor agency (CHI) authorized by the State Department to implement the program come to the job fairs. After the presentation about the Work and Travel program, students are interviewed in English language.
ADVICE FOR THE JOB FAIR PREPARATION
First and foremost, you have to realize that you are to be interviewed for a job, therefore it is advisable to look representative and leave the best impression possible. The clothes you choose should preferably be between casual and professional. For example, a shirt without a tie is appropriate, but low-cut clothes, hoodies and tracksuits are not.
Upon your arrival and first contact with an American, it is important to say: “Hi, how are you?”. Also, you should end the conversation with: “Thank you so much for your time. It was pleasure talking to you”, and other similar expressions.
The questions should be answered with simple sentences, not trying to overly impress your interviewer. You should also not respond only with “yes” or “no”. You should show them that you have previously looked up information about the location and the type of work you will be doing. It is very important to study the employer’s website and region. You will impress the interviewer if you already know the restaurant’s menu you will be working in, or if you know the facilities the hotel offers and similar things.
Prepare some really good questions. It is important to ask questions about the job, accommodation and region. By doing so you will show them that you really want to get a position you have previously chose.
BEHAVIOR
Keep smiling! Kindness and smiling can be felt though the whole interview. Do not forget that you will be working positions that demand a lot of communicating and that it is important that you make the best contact possible with the guests/ customers.
“Smart” answers! Sometimes it is important to answer the question by saying something that interviewer wants to hear from you. For example, if they ask you: “Would you accept the offer for a dishwasher if the employer does not give you the opportunity to be the busser?”. In this case you should answer: “Yes, I am very flexible, and I would love to improve my English, so I hope that he would give me the opportunity to work as a busser, after I leave a good impression”.
Do not forget that the flexibility and team work are much appreciated. It is up to you to leave the best impression possible and get the position you wanted.
Some of the questions you can expect are the following:
- Why did you choose this particular job?
- Why do you want to participate in the Work and Travel program?
- What cities do you plan to visit?
- What are you studying?
- What are some of your hobbies/interests?
- What positions suits you the best?
If you are not sure how to respond in English or you cannot remember the word, use description in order to explain what you are trying to say. Do not forget to use body language, as well. Be resourceful.
Patience! Do not forget that the job fair lasts all day. Take the opportunity to get to know students who have already participated in the program, especially if they are going again to the same place you are. They can help you a lot. Get to know students who are going to the same employer, or the same region. It is much easier to travel in groups, especially if you have applied alone.
